This fall, Wissahickon Charter School was proud to participate in the launch of G.L.O.W. (Greatness Lives in Our Words), an innovative program developed by the Malcolm Jenkins Foundation in collaboration with StoryCorps’ Brightness in Black initiative. G.L.O.W.’s curriculum is grounded in narrative justice and youth empowerment, creating space for students to reclaim their stories and imagine new possibilities.
Â
Throughout the first trimester, a select group of WCS seventh graders met twice a week as part of the program, working closely with teaching artists from the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Together, they engaged in creative design and storytelling activities rooted in reflection, imagination, and confidence. Students created their own ‘zines and participated in other hands-on visual storytelling projects that blended art, writing, and self-reflection.
Â
The program also welcomed special visits from Gwendolyn Jenkins, President of the Malcolm Jenkins Foundation, and Sandra Clark, CEO of StoryCorps (and a former WCS parent!). For their final session of the trimester, students participated in a memorable Zoom conversation with Malcolm Jenkins, Philadelphia Eagles Hall of Famer and celebrated social activist. Malcolm answered thoughtful (and sometimes playful) questions ranging from how he made it to the NFL, to advice for his middle school self, to whether he is "Team Drake" or "Team Lamar."
Â
The experience will conclude with a culminating celebration for students and their families in January at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, honoring the creativity, growth, and leadership of the program’s inaugural cohort.
Â
We are deeply grateful to all of our partners and collaborators—and especially to our students, whose courage, creativity, and authenticity truly brought G.L.O.W. to life.
