Last month, Wissahickon Charter School alum, Daniel Farmer, returned to our Fernhill campus to visit former teachers and volunteer his time. He entered WCS as a 2nd grader, and was a student here from 2002 to 2009. When asked about his fondest memory as a WCS student, he shared, “My most notable accomplishment was starting the Biodiesel Club, where a group of my peers, our science teacher, and I all brewed biodiesel fuel that we donated to Outward Bound.” While at WCS, he also helped to paint the mural that is pictured here! Upon finishing 8th grade, Daniel attended Central High School (class of 2013) where he participated in the Environmental Club, managed the school store, and served as captain of the Ultimate Frisbee team. As a high school student, he was also awarded various Outward Bound scholarships to travel to Colorado, North Carolina, and Georgia. In 2013, Daniel enrolled in University of Delaware’s Honors Program, and graduated with a B.A. in Environmental Studies with a concentration in Environmental Advocacy. As a college student, he co-founded a program that hosted newly admitted students, served as an officer in the Outing Club, held two internships, and worked as a Resident Assistant, just to name a few of his many achievements. After graduating from University of Delaware in 2017, Daniel worked as an Environmental Education Volunteer for Peace Corps Mexico. He lived in a rural mountain community in Central Mexico for two years, leading various environmental workshops in schools on topics ranging from climate science to nature appreciation to biological monitoring. At the end of his term, he chose to extend his service in the Peace Corps Mexico office, writing curriculum and designing training related to youth empowerment, gender equity, and cultural competency. Currently, Daniel works for Songs of Adaptation, a research project at Future Generations University that specializes in bioacoustics, or the study of life by sound. Soon, he is moving to Taiwan to continue his work from there. We wish Daniel, and all of our alums, the best of luck in future endeavors!
